5 Reasons to Start a Garden in 2026
If gardening has been sitting on your “maybe someday” list, consider this your invitation to make this the year you finally start a garden at home. You don’t need a huge yard, tons of time, or a magical green thumb. With a little planning and some simple beginner gardening tips, a kitchen garden can bring more joy, flavor, and beauty into your everyday life than almost any other home project.
Here are six reasons to start a garden this year—drawn from what I’ve seen in my own backyard and in the gardens I help clients build throughout St. Louis.
1. You’ll Feel an Incredible Sense of Pride
One of the biggest benefits of gardening is the deep sense of pride you feel as you watch something you planted grow and thrive. There’s something transformative about stepping outside, clipping herbs, or harvesting a handful of greens for dinner.
My clients often tell me their kitchen garden becomes their favorite part of their home—not because it looks perfect, but because it makes them feel capable. Growing your own food gives you confidence in the kitchen, inspires healthier meals, and adds a sense of ritual to daily life. Even a simple pasta dish feels special when you add basil you harvested yourself.
2. Your Produce Will Taste Better (and You’ll Waste Less Food)
If you’ve never tasted truly fresh homegrown produce, get ready—you’re going to be shocked by the flavor difference. Tomatoes, peppers, celery — you name it — all taste incredibly more flavorful when they’re grown locally and in season.
Gardening will also reduce what I call “greens guilt.” Instead of buying a bunch of cilantro or spinach that wilts in the fridge, you simply harvest a small handful when you need it. You stop overbuying, stop throwing out soggy greens, and start cooking with ingredients at their peak.
Your garden becomes your own seasonal, fresh, always-open market.
3. You Don’t Need Hours of Work or Constant Weeding
A huge myth about gardening is that you’ll spend your weekends knee-deep in weeds. Not true—especially if you use intensive planting methods to maximize the plants you want (delicious vegetables) and minimize those that you don’t want (weeds).
With good soil, raised beds, proper spacing, and mulch, you can create a low maintenance garden that requires less than five minutes a day.
This is why I spend so much time helping clients design their garden layout: a well-planned garden lets you enjoy the beauty and the harvest without feeling overwhelmed.
4. St. Louis Has a Surprisingly Great Growing Season
If you’re gardening in St. Louis, you’re in luck. Our region has a the perfect mix of cool, moderate and hot days throughout the growing season that allows for a wide range of crops.
With the right planning, you can grow from March through November, growing:
Early spring greens, radishes, and peas
Summer tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, beans, and herbs
Fall carrots, kale, broccoli, lettuces, and root crops
Whether you’re a brand-new gardener or returning for your second season, the diversity of what you can grow in St. Louis is incredible.
5. A Garden Brings Daily Joy—for You and Your Family
Gardening slows you down in all the best ways. Even a one-minute walk through your garden becomes a ritual—a way to reconnect with nature and take a breath before the day begins.
Plants grow fast, and watching them change daily brings a constant sense of wonder. For families, especially with young kids, this is one of the most meaningful benefits of gardening. My daughters love seeing where food comes from. They get excited about eating vegetables because they’ve helped plant, water, and harvest them (a huge win as a toddler mom!).
Gardening with kids also builds curiosity, responsibility, and a natural connection to food that lasts a lifetime.
